Reflect

Jesus’ listeners in the first century would have been familiar with sheep’s behavior: they are safest in groups with a trusted leader, like a shepherd. On their own and without guidance, sheep would’ve been vulnerable to wild animal attacks, theft, and other dangers. Jesus saw His people, even those who didn’t know Him yet, as lost and alone.

Instead of leaving us to fend for ourselves, Jesus stepped in to be our good shepherd. He has compassion on us all, so much so that He laid down His life for us. He didn’t do this out of obligation or duty, like a hired hand watching the flock only for the pay. He did it out of His love for us.

Jesus came to rescue you, to make you more like Him, and to show you God’s deep love and mercy for you. He is gentle, compassionate, and trustworthy. He is the way, the truth, and the life. As you continue reading this week, keep His character in mind. He brings good news that’s needed just as much today as it was two thousand years ago.
