Review

1. What did Jeremiah remember?

2. How did he find hope?

3. What about God’s character did he cling to?

Reflect

As tears streamed down Jeremiah’s face, he saw one ray of hope in all the sin and suffering that surrounded him: God’s faithful love that never ends. Jeremiah remembered the time he’d been thrown into a cistern, or pit, while bringing God’s word to the Israelites. He’d been warning them of the very destruction he now lamented, and in response, his listeners wanted to kill him for treason.

Jeremiah had sunk into the mud at the bottom of the cistern, and now he was drowning in darkness and despair. In both places, he turned to God for hope. Our Father is unchanging – He's the same faithful God who rescued Jeremiah, who heard his cries of lament, as He is today.

In your darkest valley and on your highest mountaintop, God is the same. Do you have a story of how He’s been faithful to you in the past? Remind yourself of His love for you, what He’s brought you through, and how He’s been with you. He’s the same God in your pain today as He has always been and forever will be.

Respond

What is your story of God’s faithfulness? How can you remind yourself of His character in times of sorrow and suffering? Spend some time in prayer thanking God for His unchanging character. Ask Him to reveal more of Himself to you and to help you remember who He is when you need Him most.
