Thoughts That Please the Spirit

Series: Re-Imaged | Week 1: An Image To Bear

Read Romans 7:21-25 in your personal Bible or at the link provided.

Review

  1. What is the principle of life Paul has discovered?
  2. What is the other power that is at war within us?
  3. Who will free us from this life?

Reflect

Romans 7:15 is one of the most relatable verses in Scripture.

“I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.”

Same. Same. Same.

Verses 21-24 go on to explain why this is. Look at the extreme language that is used. It’s because there is a war going on within us. And the power of the enemy is so strong that it will make us a slave to sin.

What hope do we have? It’s right there in verse 25. “Thank God! The answer is Jesus Christ our Lord.” Jesus is the only one who can save us.

God did what our good intentions could never do. He sent His own Son to save us. He sent His very Spirit to live with us. His life-giving Spirit has freed us.

We have been freed, but the war rages on. We will lose some of the battles along the way, but take heart because we know how it ends. Victory is ours in Christ Jesus.

Respond

Romans chapter 8 goes on to say that this battle is won and lost in our minds.

“Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit.”

Are there any sinful thoughts that are dominating your mind in this season? Confess those to God. Then take time to reflect on the things that please the Spirit. Faith is one thing we know pleases God. Below is a prayer of faith that you can start praying today.

“Father, I believe you have won the battle. I believe you are with me. I believe that through your Spirit, I have the power to overcome. Help me to think about things that please the Spirit.”
