1. How is God described in verse 20?
2. How does this change the way we approach Him?
3. In verse 22, what are we called to do?

Reflect
Throughout this week’s chapter, John has laid out what it looks like to be a child of God. Without context, it can sometimes feel like a list of dos and don’ts. But as we’ve seen all week, John brings us back to relationship.

All too often, we let guilt keep us from believing we can come into God’s presence. Feelings have become truth in our current culture, leading us to make what we feel more important and real than what God says. John reminds us that this couldn’t be further from reality. God knows everything about us, and He’s greater than our feelings. He invites us to come to Him in prayer with bold confidence.

Our feelings can tell us something, but only God knows everything. Feelings can change, but God stays the same. Feelings can fail us, but God never will. If we get past our feelings and into the presence of God, we’ll find the sweetest, most fulfilled, abundant life. Let’s choose today to trust the One who is greater than our feelings.

Respond
How often do you rely on your feelings or let them guide you? Do you see a pattern in where or when you’re most likely to do this?
Have your feelings ever failed you? On the flip side, have you ever done something that didn’t feel good but ended up being good for you? How does this challenge you to override your feelings with truth in the future?
When feelings threaten to overrule God’s voice in your life, what is one step you could take to refocus on truth?

Pray through these questions, and write down what God is prompting you to do next. Share with a friend, and take a step to apply it.
