Matthew 9:11
But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked [Jesus’s] disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with such scum?
This is tragic. The Pharisees completely missed it. And we do, too. Due to our brokenness and sin, the human heart always puts people into categories: These people are in and those people are out. These people are okay and those people are not okay. These people are acceptable and those other people aren’t. But the message of Jesus is the opposite! There aren’t categories of people, there’s just people. There aren’t degrees of sin, there’s just sin. The message of Jesus is, ‘You’re invited. You belong.’
Even though you may never verbalize it, where are you communicating through your actions that someone is out or not acceptable? Think through the people you interact with on a daily basis – at work, at the store, at home – and ask God to show you where you may be unknowingly communicating the message of the Pharisees instead of the message of Jesus.
