The one.

Series: FOBO (Fear Of Better Options) | Week 2: How Do I Find The One?

Ephesians 5:31-33
“As the Scriptures say, 'A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.' This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”

How do you find ‘the one’? The problem with this idea of a soulmate is that it’s not a biblical idea. These verses show us that two become one, not two halves become whole. The author even goes on to say it’s a mystery. Biblical marriages are rooted in the idea that we aren’t perfect but, because of our love for someone, we are all in with them. We are making them the one. We are committed to loving them like Jesus loves His church. When we think of a better option, we think only of helping our husband or wife look more like Jesus every day.

Respond

 1. If you’re married, in what areas have you ever fallen into the trap of expecting your spouse to be perfect and fulfill you in ways only God can do? Instead of focusing on imperfections, think of a few ways you can help them grow closer to Jesus.

2. If you’re single with a desire to marry, ask God to change your perspective on this idea of a soulmate and to release you from the pressure of having to find ‘the one’.
