Shaping our character.

Series: Resilient | Week 1: Didn't See it Coming

Genesis 37:18-20
“When Joseph’s brothers saw him coming, they recognized him in the distance. As he approached, they made plans to kill him. ‘Here comes the dreamer!’ they said. ‘Come on, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns. We can tell our father, ‘A wild animal has eaten him.’ Then we’ll see what becomes of his dreams!’”

Just a little while after telling his family about his dreams, Joseph goes, at his father’s request, to check on his brothers in the fields where they’re working. As his brothers see him coming, they plot to kill him but end up selling him into slavery instead. Instead of telling their father what they’ve done, the brothers lead Jacob to believe Joseph had been killed. God will eventually use the terrible events beginning to unfold in Joseph’s life for good. He loves Joseph too much to let his character go unchanged.

Respond in Prayer
Reflect for a minute now on how you are allowing God to shape your character through this crisis. Just as God used events in Joseph’s life to chisel his character, ask Him to use this pandemic to shape your character into His image as well! The only thing that would make this crisis worse is emerging from it with your character unchanged. If you need people in your life to help you on this journey check out our 8-week online groups starting this week!

For Families with Kids at Home
Sometimes our role as parents involves telling our kids the right way to go, and sometimes it involves showing them or guiding them in ways that don’t involve any words at all. Ask God to give you the wisdom today to know the difference: when to tell your kids which way to go, and when to patiently and quietly show them.
