Our Savior sent His Spirit.

Series: Waymaker | Week 2: Promise Keeper

John 16:5-16
But now I am going away to the One who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I’ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send Him to you.”

As Jesus explains to His disciples what will soon happen to Him, they show concern only for themselves and what will happen to them if Jesus leaves. Jesus promises it is actually better for them if He goes because, when He does, He will send the Holy Spirit (Advocate, Counselor, Comforter, Helper) to them. Jesus was a man who could only be in one place at one time. The Holy Spirit lives inside each and every person who places their faith in Jesus, guiding them into truth, convicting of sin, filling them with power, and bringing glory to God.

Respond in Prayer
As you spend a few minutes with God right now, take some time to think about the role of the Holy Spirit in your life. Have you experienced Him as a power that fights for you? Prays on your behalf? Strengthens you in a time of need? Keeps you connected to God? Thank God that, when Jesus went to the cross, He had a plan to never leave you alone. Ask for the ability to see more of the Spirit at work in your life.
Optional: see here for more references of the Holy Spirit in the Bible.

For Families with Kids at Home
As you parent today, remember this: the Holy Spirit is with you every moment, every hour, every minute. He is your counselor, your comforter, your helper. When you feel stressed, overwhelmed, overstimulated, and exhausted, the Holy Spirit is near. You’re not in this by yourself. Because of what Jesus’ finishing work on the cross and the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are never alone.
