Idolatry.

Series: Screen Time | Week 2: Power Down

Romans 1:20-21
“For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see His invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God. Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship Him as God or even give Him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.

Did you know God can be known just by looking at His creation? Creation shows us a God of power, intelligence, and mystery. The problem isn’t that we don’t know God, it’s that we don’t glorify Him as God. Human beings can’t seem to help themselves from taking good things and turning them into god things. It’s called idolatry and worshipping the created rather than the Creator will only leave us feeling emptier, lonelier, and more anxious than ever. The problem, according to these verses, is that the longer we do this, the more it becomes a habit for us. Our hearts become darkened and we lose our sense of who God truly is and His work in our lives.

Where do you go when you’re feeling restless or when you need inspiration? Where do you turn when you are bored, lonely, or stressed? Has the device you hold in your hand become a gateway for idols to slip in and replace what only God can give and do in your life? Take a minute to answer these questions honestly and talk about them with your Creator.
