Faith that amazes.
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed. Turning to the crowd that was following him, he said, “I tell you, I haven’t seen faith like this in all Israel!” And when the officer’s friends returned to his house, they found the slave completely healed.
Jesus was amazed at the faith the Roman solider displayed in asking for his help. The solider believed that Jesus could help him. He didn’t grow up in church, he didn’t grow up with God being in the conversation, but by being stationed in Palestine he had learned enough about the God of the Jews, and it caused him to believe. It says that he went as far as to help build a synagogue for them. He believed that God could help him.
The second thing was – he had humility. He not only believed that God could heal, but he was humble enough to ask. He was humble enough to admit that he couldn’t do this alone. He was a leader, but he still came to the spot where he needed help. He needed God to intervene. He humbled himself and he made the request.
Today, pray for the kind of faith and humility needed to ask for help. We can’t do it alone and we shouldn’t try—we always have Jesus to help and heal us.
