The Pretenders

In Matthew 23, we discover Jesus saying some pretty harsh things to a group of people. Now if you didn’t know any better, you might think that it was a group of shady politicians, greedy CEOs, or slimy sex offenders … but it was actually the religious crowd. We have a tendency to think of Jesus as the “Mister Rogers” of the Bible who urges people to “be His neighbor.” But in this passage, Jesus is acting a little more like “Rambo.” In fact, He calls these religious people hypocrites, which isn’t a very pleasant word. One definition describes it as the act of pretending. It is a person who is a phony or a fake. A person who wears multiple masks in order to manage other people’s perceptions. We are all guilty of it, and most of us know it. Join us as we unpack Matthew 23 and expose the pretender that exists in each one of us.
