Matt Hessel, Connections Pastor

Matt works with guests to help them make the transition from first-time visitors to members while connecting them to TPCC via life groups, ministry involvement, Discovery classes, First Step, and other outreach opportunities. He also oversees the baptism process and is involved with one-on-one faith counseling. Just as the Church is the Body of Christ, and a body cannot have parts separated from each other … Matt's job is vital in helping people connect to the body at TPCC, so they can grow in their walk with Jesus and strengthen the Body of Christ.
Family: Wife, Kelly (who is out of my league) and son, Sawyer
Hometown: Indianapolis (I'm a Hoosier even though I don't know what that means)
Educational Background: Brownsburg High School, class of 2000; Indiana Wesleyan University, class of 2004
Career Background: After college, I spent seven years in corporate America, all of that time in sales. I spent three years selling IT equipment to companies and three years working for a sports merchandising company where my focus was with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy Car Series. I also started my own company that helped commercial and industrial property owners lower their property taxes.
Hobbies: Any sport … mainly golf, basketball, football, and softball. I also enjoy motorcycles, acting, swimming with my son, dating my wife, and reading.
Best part about his job: Jesus Christ has saved me, redeemed me, and is continuing to sanctify me. He is my Lord and I'm His humble servant. I get to talk to people about Jesus, and help them grow in their faith and relationship with Him. On top of that, I get to serve His Kingdom as a pastor at the church I grew up in, was baptized in, and married in (that's pretty awesome). I'm just a nobody trying to tell everybody about Somebody.
Interesting things to know about Matt:
- I met my wife at TPCC when we were 6 or 7 years old.
- I auditioned for a Jerry Bruckheimer movie (didn't get the part).
- I was almost killed on my honeymoon in a tragic "vine-swinging-into-a-very-shallow-natural-spring-in-the-rain-forest-that-I-had-no-business-attempting" accident.
- I had to be rescued by lifeguards in the Pacific Ocean when I was in high school … it's an embarrassing story.
- I'm about to play my third major championship golf course this year.
